I’m Chris Holtzhauer. I’m an attorney recruiter, entrepreneur, husband, dad, reader, poker player, guitar player and amateur songwriter in Miami.

Work

I’ve been recruiting since 2009. I started Holtz & Bernard in 2019 to focus exclusively on attorney search.

Most of my work is helping attorneys figure out where they want to go next, then helping them get there. On the other side, I work with law firms to find lateral attorneys who add value on day one.

I like recruiting because it sits somewhere between sales, matchmaking, negotiation and strategy. Done well, you have to understand what both sides actually want, not just what they say they want.

I’d rather make fewer placements that last than a lot of placements that don’t.

I also like building things. Holtz & Bernard is one of them. ClearWage is another. There will definitely be more.

Outside of work

Outside of work, I read a lot, almost entirely nonfiction. Mostly biographies, business, history and philosophy. I highlight the hell out of books, which is why I started keeping my notes here.

I’ve played poker for most of my adult life and still play live tournaments when I can. I make music, usually badly until occasionally something sounds pretty good. And I’m always working on some project, idea or experiment.

Family

More important than any of that, I’m a husband and father. Being a great dad is probably the thing I care most about getting right.
